The city is upgrading the 23rd Avenue and 4th-5th Street intersection to make it safer and more accessible for everyone. The upgrades involve better designs for walking, biking and driving, in addition to new landscaping and artwork.
With the last major reconstruction in the 1970s, the intersection’s infrastructure is aged and will require replacement as part of the project. The 5th Street Bridge over No. 3 Ditch will also be revamped. These changes aim to create a safer and more appealing space for our community.
Project Overview
The 23rd Avenue/4th-5th Street intersection is a vital junction where various transportation options meet. It connects to important community places like the James Madison STEAM Academy, Houston Gardens, parks, ball fields, churches, businesses and homes housing over 350 residents within a quarter-mile radius. However, the infrastructure at this intersection is aging. It's time for a major update.
Project Goals
Enhance the way the intersection is laid out for safety.
Make the intersection handle more traffic smoothly.
Create pathways for various transportation modes.
Work together with upcoming structure changes.
Replace aging infrastructure.
Add a touch of beauty with landscaping, artwork and more.
