Twin Rivers Project Update

Twin Rivers Playground Project Update
Greeley's Parks Division has been reviewing and refining the preliminary design drawings from our landscape architecture partner, DHM Design. These drawings establish the overall layout, major features, and basic flow of the playground. This important milestone allows us to refine details and finalize equipment selections as we move toward construction.
Accessibility Focus Group Feedback:
In September, we held an accessibility focus group to ensure this playground serves all members of our community. Members of this focus group include experts from: Envision Colorado, Centennial BOCES School to Work Alliance Program, The Arc of Northeast Colorado, Autism Connection NOCO and City of Greeley Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation. Thank you to our focus group participants for providing valuable insight for this project.
Participants provided helpful feedback on how we evaluate playground structures for accessibility. The group responded positively to the planned undulating landscape features, which will offer varied terrain and sensory experiences throughout the play space.
The design includes accessible pathways connecting all play areas and incorporates sensory elements to create an inclusive environment for children of all abilities. Greeley parks are striving for more than ramps at their playgrounds and are working to create a playground for everyone to enjoy.
Participants provided valuable feedback that has directly shaped the design. We are working to incorporate this feedback into the playground, including:
- Bright, vibrant colors throughout
- Sensory elements, including musical features and water play via a hand pump
- Gently rolling berms that create varied terrain and engaging play experiences
- Synthetic turf as the primary accessible play safety surfacing
- Numerous ground-level play options
- A ground-level entry, group spinner for easier transfer to play on the equipment
- A large main play structure designed for safe, risk-taking and new challenges
- Swings with multiple seat options
- An exploratory sensory nature path
- Rock walls and durable fencing to visually define the playground's edge near the pond for safety
- Shade structures
- Signage with Braille (pending additional funding)
Equipment Selection and Special Features:
We are currently working through details on several special features, including the hand-pump water play element. Our goal is to create a fun and engaging sensory experience that meets all City engineering standards and is mindful of water use. We are also seeking additional funding to include Braille signage throughout the playground, which will enhance accessibility for all users.
Construction Timeline:
We remain on track to begin construction in late spring! The Twin Rivers playground will be a valuable community asset, providing an accessible and engaging space for children and families. Additional updates will be shared as the design process continues.
Thank you for your contribution!
