16th Street Construction Project Updates (updated 7/28)
Business access remains open! Want to avoid the driving and parking hassle while you’re in the area? We recommend parking outside the construction area and either walking or renting a Spin ebike/escooter to get you where you need to go for the final portion of your trip.
Work Completed & In Progress
Eastbound-only traffic remains in effect on 16th Street between 8th and 11th Avenues. Westbound lanes are closed, and all intersections are now all-way stops.
Sidewalk and curb/gutter removal and replacement continues on the north side of 16th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues.
Concrete pavement pours continue between 10th and 11th Avenues.
Tree removal began last week on the UNC campus (south side of 16th).
Upcoming Work
Crews will begin sidewalk and curb and gutter demolition between 9th and 19th Avenues. As before, crews will work in half-block increments and will do their best to minimize disruption. What you can expect:
Each business can expect activity in front of their property to last about three days.
A crushed base course will be placed and compacted after removals. Once compacted, it will be safe to walk on.
Flaggers will be on-site to help direct pedestrians safely around the work.
While we plan to maintain access at all times, there may be short 10-15 minute periods where we are working directly in front of entrances. During those times we will pause work as needed to ensure customers can still get in and out.
Installation of underground irrigation will begin.
Concrete pavement work will continue between 8th and 9th Avenues.
We are now 13% to completion.
Project Timeline
Work on the north side of the street remains on schedule for completion at the end of August.
Construction will then shift to the south side of the street, with work wrapping up in Fall 2025.
Final landscaping and public art installations will occur in Spring 2026, once weather and planting conditions allow.
