16th Street Construction Update (updated 8/4)

Here’s your weekly update on the 16th Street Enhancement project. Thank you for your continued patience as we move forward with improvements that will enhance accessibility and long-term infrastructure for the area.

Work Completed or Ongoing

  • Westbound travel remains closed on 16th Street between 8th and 11th Avenues. All intersections are now all-way stops.

  • Concrete pavement pouring is in process between 8th and 9th Avenues.

  • Tree removal is complete on the UNC campus (south side of 16th Street)

Upcoming Work

  • Sidewalk and curb/gutter demolition will begin this week between 9th and 10th Avenues, working in half-block increments to help maintain customer access to nearby businesses.

  • Continued pouring of curb, gutter, and sidewalk concrete throughout the corridor.

  • Ongoing installation of underground irrigation.

The project is now 15% complete.

Project Timeline

  • Work on the north side of 16th Street is on schedule for completion by the end of August 2025.

  • Construction will then shift to the south side, with work wrapping up in Fall 2025.

  • Final landscaping and public art installations will follow in Spring 2026, when weather and conditions allow.
