Over 200 community members looked at the draft trail map online at Speak Up Greeley and at eight different pop-up events. More than 75% of people said the proposed trail routes would take them where they want, showing that the Trails Master Plan will meet most people’s needs. Based on community feedback, some routes were added or changed during this stage.
Planning trail alignments in an urban area is complex because it requires balancing multiple factors, such as existing infrastructure, safety, and environmental concerns. The plan has to consider whether trails fit within the existing city layout, are safe and accessible, and create trails that meet community needs.
To help analyze the draft plan, the Technical Advisory Committee provided feedback on prioritizing the trails. After experts reviewed the criteria, all the suggested trails in the plan were analyzed based on the following:
Using this information and local knowledge from City staff, trail routes are prioritized based on:
Around 16 miles of trails are marked as priority one, with a goal of building them in the next ten years. The Trails Master Plan update provides a 10-year vision for off-street trails in Greeley. City staff is excited to present this community-focused plan to Council in Fall 2024. All maps are drafts and will be reviewed by City Council before adoption.

A huge thank you to the 200 people who responded to the survey or added their suggested future trails on the interactive map! By sharing your input, you are helping to shape the future of trails in Greeley.
Most trail users reported feeling somewhat or very safe on the trails. But you also told us about several safety issues. These safety concerns include homeless encampments and the need for better enforcement on the trails. Natural Areas & Trails continues to pursue more enforcement capabilities including ranger staff. Until a ranger program is established, Natural Areas & Trails is working with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, the Town of Windsor and the Poudre River Trail Corridor non-profit to establish a trail ambassador program to be the eyes and ears on the trail.
The survey results show that many people already use the trails to walk, bike, and exercise. But some people would use the trails more if they were easier to access without driving. Improving signage and communication could also increase trail usage. There was a resounding call for more miles of trails, particularly soft surface trails that offer a more natural experience. This information helped us develop the preliminary map.
The preliminary map is ready for you to add your input. Click on “Map” above to see the draft map showing proposed trail corridors. Please take a few minutes to drop a pin on the map showing where you would like to see a potential access point, like a neighborhood connection or future trailhead. Trails Master Plan indicates general locations rather than specific trail alignments. Future studies are needed to determine specific alignments and will include neighborhood outreach.
